Evelyn Wong, Licensed Counselor & Play Therapist
Board of Counsellors Malaysia (K.B.02454 ; P.A.01799)
It is my passion to develop people and to walk alongside them in achieving their potential. I started my career 30 years ago guiding and mentoring tertiary students, conducting talks and workshops, and did what I now know as lay-counselling. I found myself drawn to helping people understand themselves and helping them sort out personal, emotional, existential and relational issues.
Today, I am a professional counsellor who has vast experience with clients across all ages. I had worked in social services, at schools and private centres in Malaysia and Singapore. I use Satir’s approach to therapy as my framework because it has a holistic view of the person, and includes a systemic aspect. Satir was a family therapist and is well known for her iceberg metaphor of the person. With training in Satir, I can work with people with almost any issue as we work on shifting impacts and at the deeper level of the person.
For the past few years, I was heading the counselling department in an international school, supporting students from Nursery all the way to Year 11. Realising talk therapy does not work with children, I got trained in play therapy which uses various expressive means for therapy. Working with children and parents became my focus as the prognosis for the future is better when we can nip a problem in the bud. I worked with neurotypical as well as neurodivergent children and teenagers. Integrating my training as a Satir therapist, I also work with parents, do parent-child sessions as well as family sessions.
