Child counseling is a type of therapy that focuses on children 12 years old and below. Many of the issues children face mimic the issues adults face, for example, anxiety, depression, grief, anger management, childhood trauma like abuse and neglect, and many more. The aim of child counseling is to help children better interpret the issues they may be experiencing by breaking down the issues into manageable parts so young children can understand and process them better. A childhood trauma therapist will also be able to detect the possible psychological, cognitive, and physical impact on young children following trauma exposure.
None of us are meant to be happy all the time, and this includes children. Children are growing, changing, and experiencing new things as they go, and they also pick up their own personal power around different people. As they develop their personality and discover their personal strengths and weaknesses, they may also be faced with new challenges in each stage of personal growth.
As a parent or caregiver, it can be hard to cope with, especially when you feel like nothing is working or there is nothing you can do to remedy the situation. You may be wondering why it is so hard for you to communicate and understand your child. It is important to understand that the children may not share these concerns or traumatic events with their parents, not because they do not love their parents; rather, this happens because children fear disappointing their parents. When the children’ social and emotional issues and psychological distress are left untreated, it can negatively impact their development and overall well being.
What to expect in a child counseling session:
During a child counseling session, the therapist will help the child to make sense of what is going on in his/her minds, bodies, and lives, in a way that they can understand. Many children are unable to fully process the complexities that accompany the emotional and psychological issues they may be experiencing. The therapist can identify the root cause of the child’s distress and explore the underlying issues that are affecting the child. The therapist will also help him/her work through emotions and offer invaluable insights into the child’s social and emotional development and mental health in order to discover ways and methods to resume a healthy and productive life. On dealing with childhood trauma, the childhood trauma therapist may utilize play therapy to help the child connect with his/her inner feelings or thoughts.
Consider child counseling if your child:
struggles not in just one area but in several or most areas
experiences significant changes in mood and behavior
experiences changes in personality and mood that go beyond the stage of growth he or she is in
has experienced something traumatic in the past
has the tendency to say worrisome things that are out of character
expresses constant and increasing worries about the future
talks about death or giving up on life
does anything to hurt him/herself or someone else
suddenly lashes out at others in physical ways
experiences unexplained health issues
needs help with sleep issues
has frequent temper tantrums
has language regression
