"Love is a feeling, but a healthy relationship is a skill set.” We can all agree that romantic relationships take more than just feelings. They require effort and hard work to make things work between two individuals. Every couple experiences its own conflicts and difficult moments.

Couples therapy can help you at any stage of your relationship regardless of your marital status, faith, age, race or sexual orientation.  The aim of couples therapy is to help you gain insights into your romantic relationship in order to improve the overall relationship satisfaction utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions. In couples therapy sessions, you will develop a plan to build a more fulfilling and much stronger relationship.

Common topics in couples therapy includes finances, time spent together, children, familial relationships, sex and intimacy, health issues, external stressors, communication issues, emotional distance, affairs and infidelity, significant life events, trauma and so on.

If you happen to identify with any of the above issues in your relationship, don’t worry, you are not alone; there is no shame in seeking help!

What to expect in a couples therapy session:

During a couples session, the therapist will guide you through a process of examining the roles you and your partner play in the relationship. You will learn how to identify feelings and put them into words to one another, explore ways to handle your conflicts and find a conflict resolution that works for both you and your partner, revisit the past to help you better understand your fears, motivations, and behaviors in a relationship, and foster a better understanding of not just yourself, but also your partner.

Couples therapy can also help you discover patterns of interaction that may have become unhelpful to the relationship and help address differences in expectations, learn what you and your partner values most, discuss your beliefs and values, and the implications these have on your lives together.

Consider couples therapy if you:

  • are struggling with your relationship

  • want to learn how to effectively communicate according to each other’s needs

  • are experiencing emotional distance from your partner

  • want to reconnect and rediscover

  • would like to improve connection and communication with your partner

  • want to make your good relationships better and learn new and healthy relationship skills

  • find that the communication between you and your partner is stuck

  • lack intimacy with your partner

  • are feeling stuck about how to manage a hard decision together

  • are having the same fight over and over again without resolution

  • are considering splitting up

  • notice a major stressor on the relationship such as infidelity, financial strain, or trauma

  • experiencing the aftermath of an affair

  • want to rebuild trust and allow healing to take place in your relationship
